KSP: One dead following Monday morning shooting
Early Monday morning, Pamela Smith called 911 and told dispatchers she shot her estranged husband, Terry Briggs, 37, after he entered her home in Phelps, police said. One woman who knows Smith said she is in shock.
"As far as Pam goes, like I said, she's a real nice girl," she added. "I met her about two years ago. Terry, I've spoken to him about two times. Seemed to be a pretty decent nice guy."
Neighbors said they did not hear about the shooting until later Monday morning, after the scene cleared.
Police tell us a Domestic Violence Order was active against Briggs at the time of the shooting.
In March, police charged Briggs with assault, saying he hit his girlfriend in the face and choked her. The arrest citation does not state if the girlfriend mentioned is Smith.
No charges related to the shooting have been filed at this time. However, police do plan to send the evidence to a grand jury.
Investigators said Briggs entered Smith's home and threatened her. Smith then shot him with a handgun. Briggs died at the home.
The coroner says Briggs' body was taken to the Medical Examiner in Frankfort for an autopsy.
