Kentucky State Police confirmed the identity of a body found in Harlan last week.

The body was found on July 12 in the basement of a home on May Street.

Troopers identified the body as Tim Middleton, 50, of Harlan. Middleton went missing on December 28, 2018. Harlan City Police Department was investigating at the time.

Middleton's family has not given up on finding him over the last seven months.

"The whole you kind of think even though it's really hard to hope that they are still going to be alive or ever speak to you again. And, then it's just, it's not the same," said Middleton's daughter, Jenny Prophit.

But that hope was diminished when Tim's body was found.

"It's something that we didn't to hear, but we needed to hear. Because not knowing was the worst thing," Middleton's daughter, Jessica Middleton said.

While their hearts are broken, the sisters said they were glad to finally have a few answers.

"I'm just glad that we can actually, with the closure that we've got, that we have it. And, give him some respect and put him to rest finally," said Jessica Middleton.

The family said the hardest part was that Middleton was found in the basement of a home just down the street from their house.

As of now KSP has not determined the cause of death and is still investigating.

Original Story, July 13
Kentucky State Police say a body has been found on May Street in Harlan.

Police say the owner of the property was at the home and noticed the basement door was opened. They say the owner went into the basement and found a decomposed body on Friday evening.

Officials believe the body found matches the identity of a missing person in the county, but the body was sent to Frankfort for an autopsy.

Kentucky State Police say no one has lived in the home for six years and the owner was cleaning the property when the body was found.

The cause of death is still under investigation.
