LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT)- Kentucky State Police said 22-year-old David Thomas of Knott County was killed while cutting trees in Letcher County Saturday morning.
Friends and family are still trying to make sense of it all.
"It was just kind of like a dream, like someone was joking," said a close friend of Thomas', Dustin Maddin.
First responders received a call about the logging accident around 8:45 in the morning.
An initial investigation showed that people were cutting trees when a felled tree became stuck in the top of another tree. As they continued working, the trapped tree fell to the ground. Police say Thomas was killed when the tree fell.
There were no reports of other injuries.
Family members of David Thomas said he had a heart of gold.
"He's just truly a great soul, you'll never find a soul no better than Bub," said his first cousin Natasha Thomas. Most people knew Thomas as 'Bub.'
"I haven't ever heard one person say anything bad about Bub. He was just absolutely one of a kind," said Dora Bates, another close family friend.
Many people knew Thomas as a lover of horses. He was heavily involved with Knott County Trail Rides.
"His group of friends have actually decided they wanted to put a memorial horse ride together," said his sister Kendra Yates.
Thomas' visitation is Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Nelson Frazier Funeral home. His funeral is at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
