BREATHITT, Ky. (WYMT) - "The land of the free and the home of the brave." That saying speaks volumes in Breathitt County.
"They don't see themselves as heroes, they just see themselves as someone who had a duty to do and they did it and never complained about it," says President of Jackson-Breathitt County Chamber of Commerce Doug Fraley.
On Friday, in the city of Jackson, people came out to remember the local veterans who sacrificed for them.
"It means a tremendous amount this day and age that we truly honor the sacrifice and service of our military," says Democratic candidate for secretary of state Heather Henry French.
These selfless men and women risked their lives, to save ours, without expecting anything in return.
"I did what my country asked me to do," says Ervine Allen, who served in the Vietnam War.
Now on this Memorial Day, we pay respect to the ones who paid the ultimate price and say thank you to the ones who are with us today.
"We need to remind everyone that this is a day we honor our fallen heroes," says Henry.
More than 150 crosses are spread out through Douthitt Park to honor the fallen soldiers of Breathitt County.
