BAXTER, Ky. (WYMT) - The Harlan versus Harlan County football game for week one of the 2019 high school football season is canceled, officials with the schools announced Wednesday.
Harlan Independent Superintendent C.D. Morton told WYMT that the school didn't have enough players to field a team that would be competitive.
Morton said that the team has averaged around 17 players this summer in practice, but is hopeful that as the season progresses more players will join the team.
The game will be recorded as a 1-0 forfeit win for Harlan County and will count on the win/loss record of both schools.
"Both districts greatly regret that the much-anticipated game could not be played," Harlan County Superintendent Brent Roark said in a release issued by the school.
The remainder of the Harlan-Harlan County football series will be canceled as well, meaning the two schools will not play in 2020.
Both teams will not schedule a replacement game for the August 23rd date.
