Harlan County bicentennial festival continues

HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) - Harlan County celebrates 200 years this year. Thursday, a festival celebrating the anniversary kicked off in downtown Harlan.

There are be carnival rides, local music and on Saturday, a cake that feeds nearly 600 people.

"We have so much history and we have so many colorful things to celebrate and we've just been so excited about this year and we invite everyone to come out and enjoy themselves this weekend," said Brandon Pennington with Harlan County's Tourism.

Friday morning several events taught students about local history including a Silas Harlan demonstration as well as questions and answers from local historians.

"It was kind of a chance to let the kids know what it means to be from Harlan County and some of the interesting things about the history of Harlan County," said James Greene.

Some of those included the 100 years of history before coal and successful people that are from Harlan County.

Judge-Executive Dan Mosley said the festival is a time to celebrate Harlan County's history together.

"We're very very excited to be able to celebrate what we are, what we've been, and uh, look forward to a promising future," said Mosley.
