Former Corbin swimmer qualifies for U.S. Olympic Trials
From the time she was around a year old, Parker Herren has always been by the pool.
"Honestly nothing compares to being in the water," said Herren.
Now entering her junior year of college in the fall, not much has changed.
"That's always the dream. You know you watch the Olympics when you're younger you're like oh my gosh I want to be there, but I don't think you ever seriously think like I have a shot at it," added Herren.
Last summer she qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 100-meter backstroke.
“The second I touched the wall I looked at the scoreboard and I saw my time and I got it to the 100th like exactly down to to the hundredth of a second."
However, she has come a long way from walking on at Kentucky.
“We kind of talked about me walking onto the team because it wasn’t reasonable for me to be able to get a scholarship I wasn’t that good and I knew it and it took a little convincing he didn’t think I was going to be able to do it,” said Herren.
Her first summer on the team was a tough one.
"He finally let me walk on and I started that summer and it was horrendous it was honestly embarrassing for me because I was getting laughed every day so far and it was so hard," added Herren.
Although it was not easy, her never give up attitude got her to where she is today.
"No one ever thought I was going to make it this far especially to an Olympic trials qualifications because that’s really really really difficult to do," said Herren.
Her teammates and her coaches could not be more proud of her success and accomplishments.
"They would send me all these nice like text messages and stuff and they’re like we know you’re working so hard you’re doing so amazing. We believe in you and stuff like that so it just really helped me stick with it and get where I am today,” added Herren.
