LONDON, Ky. (WYMT)- Recently, leaders in our region have met to brainstorm ways to diversify our economy, bringing more growth and expansion to the area.

Today, folks in Laurel County had a reason to celebrate after UPS announced an expansion, bringing more than 50 jobs to the county.

"It's good. Good time to be in this area," said Ben Lancaster, Business Manager at UPS London.

Expanding business; that’s what brought folks to celebrate Thursday.

"As we plan our work and work our plan, in preparation for those new jobs, it's to make sure the rest of the world knows that southern and eastern Kentucky is open for business," said Congressman Hal Rogers.

Officials at UPS London said the expansion will create permanent and seasonal jobs.

"There was a need for us to handle expansion to handle our extra volume and the trucks," Said Lancaster.

"Lots of jobs,” said Congressman Rogers. “Driving the trucks, making deliveries and working in the plant here."

Congressman Rogers says the economy is trending upward in Eastern Kentucky.

"And the fact that this company is needing to be expanded here tells you a lot about the growth of the economy in London/Laurel County and this region," said Congressman Rogers.

Leaders said they will start hiring as soon as next week.
