Florence remnants impact Kentucky late Sunday

(WYMT) - Tropical Storm Florence continues to impact the Carolinas bringing flooding and storm surge. The storm has stalled out, bringing high water issues for many, including the inland locations.

Short Term Forecast
While catastrophic flooding is going on in parts of North Carolina, our forecast is still quiet here at home. The story for the mountains has been plenty of sunshine, a few clouds and a scattered shower chance this afternoon. As you head to football games this evening, be sure to check the WYMT Weather App for the latest weather information.

Lows tonight will drop down into the mid-upper 60s with some patchy fog late this evening. Skies will remain partly cloudy through the mountains.

Saturday looks very similar to Friday with more clouds late in the day. Those clouds will actually be from Florence and bring a slightly better rain chance for the afternoon. Rain chances will remain at 30% on Saturday with highs in the mid-80s.

Extended Forecast
While Florence is expected to bring up to 30" of rain to some areas in North and South Carolina, the storm will be much weaker and disorganized by the time it starts working its way toward us.

The latest data brings the system, either as a tropical depression or the remnants of the storm, into our area late Sunday afternoon going into the evening hours. The rain chances will continue Sunday night, through Monday and into early Tuesday.

The heaviest rain should be confined to far Eastern Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and Southern West Virginia. Most locations are looking at 1-2" of rain, with some isolated higher amounts. Winds will be as high as 25-35 mph at times. We will keep an eye on the conditions through the weekend.

We don't expect this to cause too many problems, but some local high water issues are possible.

Our team will be monitoring this situation around the clock all weekend long. Don't forget that you can track Hurricane Florence not only here at home, but as it makes its way through the Carolinas on the WYMT Weather app. It's a free download in both app stores. Be sure to keep it locked to WYMT, wymt.com and our social media pages. We're dedicated to you.
