Sister station WKYT reports, this is the first time the event was held at Kroger Field.
The number of people who preregistered was more than triple that of past years.
Firefighters climbed an equal amount of stairs to those the firefighters had to climb in the World Trade Center.
"18 years ago we promised to never forget and this is just one of the things we do to help keep that promise," said Todd Houston, a firefighter.
Community members were invited out Wednesday as well to participate in the climb or just to cheer on the ones that did climb.
