PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - One of the 10 people or groups of people honored at the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet were first responders.

The first responders honored Thursday evening are those the helped keep Pikeville safe during a white nationalist rally that happened back in April of 2017.

Law enforcement officials say they would not have been able to make sure violence did not break out at the event without great support and planning that they had.

"There were so many departments, I've seen so many of them here tonight, there's no way possible that we could have achieved what we achieved without their help", said Chris Edmonds, Chief of the Pikeville Police Department. "Those guys were a lifesaver for us as far as manpower and just that presence that we needed to make everything secure for everyone."

Edmonds says it was a unified effort between Pikeville Police, the FBI, The Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Sheriff's Office, and others.

They won Service Organization of the Year.
