Wednesday morning firefighters responded to a call of a fire at Chilly Willy’s in the Phelps community of Pike County.

The first page came in around 2:45 a.m.

"When we arrived on scene there were flames visible out the roof," said Joshua Hurley, a firefighter with Phelps Fire Department. "Once we got water and everything to the trucks, got a water supply going we made the interior attack."

Hurley said the fire was mostly contained by 4 a.m., but crews continued monitoring for hot spots.

Around 11 a.m. the fire rekindled, causing flames to tear through the second floor of the building.

"Right now we can not make any type of entry the floors are falling in, the roof is caved in, so right now it's not a safe environment for anybody to be in that's why everything's just containing the fire from the outside," said Hurley.

Officials said the owner’s parents live on the second floor, but were not home at the time of the fire.

Right now officials said it is too early to tell what caused the fire.

Many who live in the Phelps community are sad to see the fire damage what they believe is a staple of the community.

"Sad for our community to lose another business, you know," said Para Belcher, who lives near Chilly Willy's.

Belcher said she loved to eat at the restaurant.

"Four to five times a week, sometimes more and we had the Valentine's Day dinner and it was delicious," said Belcher.

Now many in the community hope the restaurant can rebuild.
