Fire destroys Perry County home
A Perry County family escaped their home just moments before it went up in flames on Monday afternoon.
The home was in the Hardburly area. Crews say they were called out to the fire just after 1:30. When firefighters arrived a few minutes later, flames were already shooting out of the roof.
Everyone inside the home got out safely.
"The homeowner says he heard a loud noise, went upstairs to check on it and found smoke," said Jakes Branch Fire Department Captain Doug Beverly.
Beverly said even though it was raining and the ground was damp, the fire spread quickly because it was an old wooden home.
"At that point in time, it became a defensive attack," said Beverly.
Beverly said crews worked for several hours to keep the flames from spreading.
