A mining company plans to lay off more than 150 people around the first of the year.

Nally and Hamilton Enterprises filed a WARN notice for five worksites in Eastern Kentucky Monday.

Affected locations include London, Hyden, Harlan and Pineville. The layoff in Pineville may affect 97 workers.

"Obviously it's shocking when you get a WARN notice from one of the most stable coal companies in the region, not just here," said Bell County Judge-Executive Albey Brock. "Naturally, any time we lose a coal job we lose three or four in support in that. So, to have 100 folks laid off, you could probably factor that, you know, multiply that by three. So you know, we would end up with three or four hundred negatively impacted."

A total of 170 employees may be affected.

Brock said he hopes that the layoffs will not come to fruition and believes the company will work to try and keep them from happening.

"I've got all the faith in the Hamilton family. They've survived for decades here in the mountains," said Brock.
