PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT)- After more than 4,000 eggs and countless hours of work, some Pike County kids woke up Easter morning with a special surprise.
"Some are filled with toys and cars. Some are filled with nail polish for the girls," recalled East Kentucky Dream Center Executive Director Rachel Campbell Dotson.
Dotson says she never thought she would "egg a house". However, as a non-profit organization, volunteers must be creative to keep the doors open.
"In a position like this you have to think outside of the box constantly," Dotson pointed out. "So everything that we do is based on donations, fundraising, and sponsorship," she continued.
With a $50 donation, volunteers scattered 100 eggs across a lawn.
"The girls are telling me if we do this again, we need to start on like Christmas Eve to fill all of these eggs," laughed Dotson.
Dotson says the feedback they receive from those who donated is priceless.
"They're just in awe. Their faces, those smiles, they make every bit of it worth it," explained Dotson.
The East Kentucky Dream Center is a faith-based non-profit organization which helps the surrounding community.
"There are several things we do to help people in need," Dotson said.
On top of holiday fundraisers, the center also provides free services.
Their doors open on Wednesday and Friday to provide free homecooked meals for around 400 people each week.
Plus, they have free clothing vouchers, free hygiene products, and furniture Donations among much more.
As the sun rises on Easter morning, Dotson says she hopes these children never forget this memory.
"I think our job as parents and as adults is to keep life interesting and to continue innocense for a child. You know, the Easter Bunny, Santa Clause, that sort of thing. We have to help them out sometimes. So the Dream Center loves tagging along with things like that," explained Dotson.
The center's motto is "Find a hurt and heal it. Find a need and fill it."
"Stuffing the eggs was a little tedious but it wasn't hard work at all. So we've loved, loved seeing the children light up," said Dotson.
Although the East Kentucky Dream Center is a faith-based organization, you do not need to be a member of a church to volunteer.
They are always looking for volunteers Monday through Saturday.
