MONTICELLO, Ky. (WYMT/WKYT) - Two people that were killed in a fire in Wayne County on Tuesday have been identified.

The coroner says Arthur Daniel Sears, 60, and his 20-month-old granddaughter Ashaya Dakota Schuitema died. Their exact cause of death is still under investigation.

Crews were called to the scene just before 3 a.m. on Tuesday.

"My son came in and he heard some popping sounds, thought maybe there had been gunshots. We saw the house up there was on fire," said Shane Shoemaker, a man who lives nearby.

About 5 hours later one victim was found, then just as the coroner arrived ten minutes later, another body was found.

"We are processing the scene at this point, still putting out some hot spots, still early stages of the investigation," said Trooper Lloyd Cochran with the Kentucky State Police.

Police kept KY-90 closed to traffic for more than 12 hours while they were working.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. The home was a total loss.
