Deputies: Abused toddler found alone on Laurel County road

LONDON, Ky. (WYMT/WKYT) A mother and grandmother are behind bars after deputies say they found a toddler walking alone near a road with only a diaper on.

A passerby apparently saw the child on Piney Hill Road Wednesday morning.

Deputies say they received a call from Brad Lefevers while on his way to work. Lefevers described what he was seeing and called officials.

"Grabbed that little baby, just sat him in my lap, went next door, pulled off, called 911 and had the cops come," said Lefevers.

At the time, deputies could not find the child's parents or a caregiver.

At the hospital, investigators say they found large bruises on the child. They later discovered that the mother and grandmother allegedly hit the two-year-old with a belt.

"We found out through investigation that the mother had apparently used a belt on the child and spanked it, looked like way too much. Very severe injuries," said Deputy Gilbert Acciardo with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators charged Angelica Mason, 24, with first-degree criminal abuse. Bobbi Cross, 45, faces a charge of first-degree wanton endangerment.

Deputies say Mason and Cross had last seen the child inside their home around 5:30 a.m.

Deputies say Mason and Cross did not know the child was missing.

Lefevers said the toddler was in pretty rough shape. He doesn't imagine how anyone could do such a thing.

"Bruised up, I mean cuts on his face, cuts on his arms, bruised, welt marks on his legs. ... His diaper, he was just soaking wet, rashes all over him. I've got three myself. I don't know how anyone can do that to a kid, I really don't," said Lefevers.
