Update: Coroner identified climber killed in Red River Gorge

(WYMT) - Members of the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team responded to a fallen climber at Muir Valley on Monday.

Members say the climber did not survive.

The Wolfe County Coroner's Office tells us the victim is Martin Vogel, 59, of Zoe. He was known to be an experienced climber, and was with four other people.

Sister station WKYT reports investigators are having trouble finding out what caused the fall.

"It's important to understand why these events occur so we can share that information and hopefully prevent future occurrences," said Wolfe County Search and Rescue Chief John May.

The coroner said they checked Vogel's equipment and did not find anything faulty.

"Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers," the search and rescue team posted on Facebook. "The climbing community has lost a good friend."

While Vogel had a Lee County address, he actually moved from Ohio. This made it a little difficult for authorities to contact his family about what happened.

"We've had a lot of people reaching out to us just in shock. This gentleman was a well-known climber, very experienced, not new to the sport, but things can happen, accidents can occur," May said.

Vogel volunteered as a youth climbing coach in Lee County at the recreational center.

Chief May said the team normally stays busy during the summer, but they do not get a lot of calls about climbers.

"It's more of your weekend warriors, your backpackers, your hikers, your campers," said May. "The climbing community, they do a really good job keeping safety where they need to be."
