Intoxicated driver narrowly misses 2 school buses during chase, sheriff says
A Wise County man is behind bars after nearly hitting two school buses, police said.
At around 4 p.m. Wednesday, the sheriff's office said a deputy found a stolen vehicle on Birchfield Road in Wise, Virginia. The deputy tried to stop the driver, Brendon Austin Caige Hill, but officials said he drove faster to try to get away.
Officials said Hill drove recklessly, nearly hitting a school bus and driving through a yard. Soon after, the suspect nearly hit another school bus head-on. The deputy used his patrol car to push the vehicle from the road to prevent a crash.
Police said Hill tried to drive away again, hitting a house before coming to a stop and then running on foot. The deputy was able to detain two others that were in the car and eventually catch up to Hill.
Police said Hill admitted to smoking meth earlier in the day. Deputies recovered a firearm, methamphetamine smoking device, and unidentified pills from the car. Hill was charged with DUI, fleeing law enforcement, possession of a concealed weapon, reckless endangerment, obstructing justice, failing to drive right of the highway, failing to maintain control, and resisting arrest.
He is currently being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield, Virginia with no bond.
