Coal miner memorial coming to Pikeville has a location
A coal miner memorial coming to downtown Pikeville now has a location.
The new memorial will be built on the corner of Main Street and Division Street across from the old courthouse.
Recently, the memorial received a $2,500 donation from Cheyenne Enterprises.
Officials said having a location allows them to move forward with getting more donations.
"I just think it's time and those others on the committee agree that we need a monument such as this that recognizes the contributions of coal miners, not only to our local economy, but to the state and country as well," said Roger Ford, President of the Pike County Coal Miner Memorial Fund.
Officials said they are exploring honoring coal miners by having their name on the monument.
They said they are working with an architect and have preliminary designs.
