Cases of Salmonella in Kentucky linked to pre-cut melons

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WYMT) - The Department for Public Health (DPH) announced Monday that the CDC linked Salmonella cases in Kentucky to pre-cut melons.

16 Kentuckians have tested positive for a strain of Salmonella Carrau so far. The pre-cut melons include cantaloupe, watermelon and honeydew.

DPH said you should throw away any pre-cut melons or fruit salads containing pre-cut melon. Caito Foods from Indianapolis, IN distributed the products. A recall was issued Friday but labels may not clearly indicate where the melon product came from, so it is better to be safe than sorry.

Other states have diagnosed cases as well. No deaths have been reported, but health officials said there is a higher than normal hospitalization rate for Salmonella.

Salmonella is very common in Kentucky, so lab tests are needed to find out if cases are connected to the outbreak.

Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. These usually develop 12-72 hours after exposure to the bacteria. Most healthy people recover without antibiotic treatment within four to seven days. Contact your health provider if you think you have symptoms that could be linked to this particular outbreak.

“Exposure to Salmonella bacteria can be debilitating and potentially life-threatening, especially for small children and individuals with weakened immune systems,” said Dr. Jeff Howard, DPH commissioner. “Anyone experiencing signs or symptoms of illness should seek medical care and clinicians should be aware of this ongoing outbreak to ensure suspected cases receive testing and investigative follow-up. All Salmonella cases should be reported to the local health department.”
