Burger Week kicks off in Corbin
The competition is fierce among the 10 restaurants participating in Burger Week this year.
Of course, every business believes they are going to win and get to steal the trophy for the next year from JonEvan Jack's, who won the People's Choice award last year.
"I think we've got one of the burgers in town by far," says Benjamin Fletcher, who works as a kitchen manager at Shep's Place.
One of their most famous burgers is a mushroom and swiss burger, and the kitchen has been rolling them out in droves since Monday afternoon, already making 300 on Tuesday morning.
For Si Senor Mexican Restaurant, the burger their team is making is one that has grilled onions and jalapenos. One that stuck closer to the types of food the restaurant normally makes.
New business owners who have ever taken part in Burger Week say they are glad to see it become such a success, estimating on Tuesday that they had already made upwards of 300 burgers.
"For us, this was a big challenge in the beginning. But, so far this has worked great for us. We're happy to be in the community," says Imer Lopez, co-owner of Si Senor Mexican Restaurant.
Pulling people off Interstate 75 and bringing them to Corbin was the whole idea for starting Burger Week four years ago.
"We were looking for a way to highlight our businesses, showcase some of their recipes. As well as get some people in the door," says Maggy Kriebel, Director of Corbin Tourism and Convention Commission.
Kriebel says Corbin has become a "foodie destination," making a Burger Week competition open to the 15 locally owned restaurants a perfect idea.
"Burger Week is unique in that it really entices people to come into a restaurant that they may not have thought about trying before. And then, once they experience the atmosphere and the burger, they're hooked," says Kriebel.
All burgers competing in Burger Week are $5 through June 15th.
