Building collapse leaves families without home

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - A building has partially collapsed in downtown Hazard.

Hazard Assistant Police Chief James East tells WYMT the old Faulkner Garage Building on East Main Street collapsed Thursday afternoon.

A few families are without a home after the back of the building fell onto Maple Street. The Red Cross is on the way to take care of those families.

"Four families, 11 people displaced but then when they got here to look at it only two apartments destroyed so only five people displaced," said Mayor Happy Mobelini.

Dan Roll is the Hazard building inspector and says the section that fell saw years of wear and tear.

"The wall you know just suffered from fatigue expansion and contraction from where were going from a real hot dry time to a cooler time," said Roll.

Our media partners at WSGS say Faulkner's moved into the building in 1936. It is not known if anyone was in the building before Faulkner's bought it.

East Main Street was not affected. Hazard police are asking people to be careful on Maple Street near where the building collapsed.
