The Johnson County animal shelter is raising money to help them get through the winter. On Sunday the shelter hosted a chili dinner-gospel sing.

Lisa Trusty-Roberts, shelter president and manager, said the event benefits a good cause.

"We are hoping it will just grow year to year like I said this is our second one so hopefully this will just grow," said Trusty-Roberts. "Ordinarily starting in the fall and winter our population goes down but we've not seen a decrease for some reason we're saying that all over Eastern Kentucky."

Money that is needed during a time the shelter has seen a recent influx of animals.

"Last two weeks we've had 20 pups come in one day. We have three different mothers with 15 puppies among them," said Trusty-Roberts. "Also during the winter months are electric bill goes up of course. "
