LETCHER, Ky. (WYMT) - ARH Hospitals in Whitesburg and Harlan received accreditation to allow students who graduate from medical school - resident physicians - to come to do their residency here in the mountains.
Program Director Bernie Sergent said this is the first Internal Medicine residency program to come to an Eastern Kentucky hospital.
Doctors say they hope this will encourage local students to come back home to help their communities.
"We were both born at the respective hospitals we will be working at so I think it's a joint collaboration to improve the health care and allow people to come back to the area to train and practice as a physician," says Associate Program Director for Internal Medicine Residency Stanley Marlowe.
The program will have a total of six spots per year.
