John Lowe

I grew up a few hundred miles north in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Since I was just a little kid, I've always been a huge sports fan, especially college sports.

I got my first taste of sports reporting in 2013, interning for WBOY in Clarksburg, West Virginia as a senior in high school. I got to learn firsthand how reporting high school and college sports works. After taking a gap year following graduation, I started studying journalism at West Virginia University where I worked for the student newspaper, The Daily Athenaeum, eventually becoming sports editor. I also worked at the college radio station, U92, and worked as a freelance sports reporter for the Associated Press, the Charleston Gazette-Mail, The Dominion Post and CBS Sports Radio.

Just before my senior year at WVU, I interned at Fox 26 in Houston where I got my first taste of broadcasting. I watched their news reporters follow up on shootings, natural disasters, and city-wide issues. Once I got back to WVU, I became the director of WVU News, the student-run campus broadcast.

After graduating from WVU, I took a job as a news reporter at WSAZ in Huntington, West Virginia. In my two years there, I covered the news of the day across Southern and Central West Virginia, Southern Ohio, and Eastern Kentucky. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I spent much of my time in Huntington working remotely, shooting a news story during the day, and occasionally shooting a football or basketball game during the evening.

I moved to Hazard in July 2021, becoming the sports director here at WYMT. I have loved every minute of telling the stories that come from the Eastern Kentucky mountains. Every single player, coach and fan has a story, and I can't wait to tell those stories to the world.
