(WYMT) - Alice Lloyd College star catcher/ shortstop Dalton Cornett has signed a professional baseball contract to play in Aguada, Puerto Rico. Cornett is scheduled to report to the league on Tuesday, June 15th.

The invited players will go through a series of skill workouts before being drafted by one of the clubs. The president of the league has recently stated that the talent level of the incoming crop of athletes should be very impressive.

When asked about his upcoming experience, the catcher replied, “I am super excited for this opportunity. It will give me a chance to see a new country, and continue my playing career as I wait to see where things lead with the upcoming professional Major League Baseball draft.”

Cornett had a fabulous season for the Eagles. He finished the year batting .450, which was fourth in the nation and also tied for fourth in doubles (15). Additionally, he finished sixth in both slugging percentage (.783), and on-base percentage (.541).

The slugger tied for the national lead in triples (5), but perhaps the Pippa Passes native’s most impressive statistic, was that he only struck out 4 times in 120 total at-bats. This easily led the nation based on bat attempts.

For his accomplishments, Cornett was voted as the NCCAA Mideast Region Baseball Player of the Year, and selected as a First Team All-American. he also led his Eagles to the NCCAA World Series as the champions of the Mideast Regional Baseball Tournament.
