Hammy the Police Pig brings squeals and smiles to Pikeville kids
PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - The Pikeville Police Department introduced its newest fundraiser this week, taking a page from the Kentucky State Police.
Hammy the Police Pig, the brainchild of PPD Captain Russell Blankenship, was influenced by Hunter Keegan Mitchell, a child he encountered who was sick but traveled everywhere with his KSP Trooper Teddy before he died at the age of 13.
Blankenship wanted to be able to provide that same sense of security to kids, with a twist from their city police force.
The pigs are also named in honor of fallen officer Scotty Hamilton, to share smiles in his memory with kids across the area.
“His nickname was Hammy. It was his gamer tag,” said Pikeville PD PIO Tony Conn. “It’s not only for a good cause, but it’s also gonna keep his tribute going.”
A raffle is underway now for the first Hammy and tickets are available for $1 at the Pikeville Police Department. The proceeds from the raffle will go toward the Community Outreach Program, which includes Shop With a First Responder and the schools programs.
