Faith restored: Bell donated to Caney Baptist Church after original bell was stolen
KNOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Earlier this year, Caney Baptist Church’s historic bell was stolen.
”I called most places around the area that you know to melt the iron,” said Pastor Lawrence Baldridge.
The original bell was not found, but a new bell is in its place after Chief Deputy Robby Slone of the Knott County Sheriff’s Office donated a bell.
”It was an overwhelming feeling that I can’t explain, and I couldn’t shake,” said Slone.
Slone said he drives by the church daily on his way to work, and after much thought and more than one month of feeling like he should help, he decided to get the ball rolling.
”I stopped by two or three times to measure it, I knew what the bell looks like, so I wanted to find one that matched perfectly in that space,” he said. “I eventually found one on eBay.”
”I’m honored that they accepted it, and it’s hanging in the place of the other one,” he added. “Just hoping my children can see that.”
The donation of the bell restored the church’s spirit after members told WYMT the bell is historic to the church’s foundation.
”We forgive everybody if you don’t forgive, you’re not forgiven, I don’t want not to be forgiven,” said Baldridge.
