Winter’s last gasp? Temps soar, then plummet as big cold front rolls through the region
HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Dogwood Winter has turned into a week-long event this year and will culminate with a big temperature swing and chances for some wintry precipitation to return in the next 24 hours.
Today and Tonight
The weather today will give you no idea a massive change is coming so soon. We will see sunny skies for most of the day, adding a few more clouds in later. Highs top out in the low 70s and become a little breezy this afternoon ahead of the big cold front that moves through tonight.
I think we stay dry for a while tonight, but the closer we get to morning, the more temperatures will drop and the better the chances for moisture get. Temperatures will play a huge role on if we see all rain, wintry mix or even some snow. We’re forecasting 36 for a low. We’ll see how it plays out.
Wednesday will be a cold day, no matter how you look at it. Even though the bulk of the precipitation may be gone before you leave the house in the morning, don’t think it’ll give up that easily. Scattered chances could be around well into the morning and maybe beyond, depending on if any additional moisture gets pulled down off the Great Lakes. Highs will struggle to make it into the mid to upper 40s, even with some late day clearing. Wednesday night will be cold with clearing skies and lows dropping to around freezing. Frost is likely, so make plans to protect your plants, flowers and crops.
The sun returns Thursday and it looks like we stay dry, for the moment. Highs will climb back into the mid-50s. We’ll finish out the work and school week dry too on Friday as temperatures rebound back into the low 60s.
Unfortunately, it looks like another front is setting up for the first part of the weekend. While the cooldown might be as massive as the first one, the rain chances are definitely better. We’ll keep you posted as we get closer.
