PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - When a monolith-like structure was spotted in Prestonsburg Monday, people quickly began spreading the news.

But the new three-sided, metal structure left many people with questions. Business owners surrounding the lot where the statue popped up said they do not know where it came from.

“That don’t look like a pipe,” said The Grey Area owner Ghent Combs. “It looks like one of those alien things.”

The owner of the property said he is also unsure who placed it there or why. He said he was out of town for the weekend and only discovered it when called by Combs on Monday.

“I’ve seen them on the news. I think, in the middle of the desert, maybe in New York there was one I saw pop up,” said property owner David Gearheart. “But I never really expected something like that to pop up in Prestonsburg.”

Mayor Les Stapleton also said he is not involved but he is hopeful that it will be good for the city since it is located near the Prestonsburg Village shopping center and other local businesses.

“The stars found star city,” Stapleton said. “I have no idea what it is. I’m glad to see it here because it is definitely drawing some interest.”

And while no one seems to know how it got there, they said its creator has skills that are out of this world- or only found in the Eastern Kentucky workforce.

“I can say I didn’t have anything to do with it. I’m not smart enough to think that one out,” Stapleton laughed.

With three sides of sturdy metal welded together and bolted into the ground, standing at around eight feet high, Gearheart said it is strange that no one saw it being constructed. But he will not stand in the way of allowing it to bring in visitors.

“I have no idea what to do about it if what to do with it. I don’t think I’m gonna do anything with it right now,” said Gearheart. “I’m just gonna wait and see what happens, I guess.”

The structure will stay in place indefinitely, according to Gearheart, unless it decides to disappear as quickly as it came.
