Front moves in this afternoon, cooler temperatures this weekend
HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - It was a scorcher on Thursday, with many locations making it into the low 90s. While it won’t be that hot today, we’ll still push toward 90 before the cold front approaches the region later.
Today and Tonight
We’ll start out your Friday like we’ve basically started out every other day this week, with some early morning fog. It will be sunny early before clouds start to roll in by late morning. The front will move through in the afternoon and evening hours, ramping up our rain chances. They will still be scattered, but there should be more of them. We should top out around 89 early this afternoon before the rain cools us down.
Tonight, after some early chances, the skies will start to clear out overnight. Lows will drop into the mid to upper 60s.
We’ll see some fog again on Saturday morning, but otherwise, it should be smooth sailing under mostly sunny skies. Highs will be somewhat cooler, only getting in to the mid 80s behind the front. We’ll get down to the upper 60s under mostly clear skies Saturday night.
Sunday features sunshine mixed with clouds and some scattered rain chances with a passing disturbance. Highs wil again be in the mid 80s before dropping into the mid to upper 60s Sunday night.
High pressure takes over for about half of the week next week. Monday through Wednesday look mostly sunny during the day and mostly clear overnight. After starting the week in the low 80s for highs, heat will build back into the forecast and we’re watching the potential for what could be a summer heat wave by mid to late week.
The GFS and Euro both have us getting into the mid 90s for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. While there is still time for that to change, if that is the case, the heat index values would be more than 100 degrees, so that is something we’re going to have to keep a very close eye on. That’s dangerous heat for sure.
Have a great weekend!
