HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Starting Friday at 5 p.m. Kentuckians will have to wear a mask when in public.

Governor Andy Beshear announced the statewide mandate Thursday night. The announcement comes on the third straight day the state recorded numbers over the 300 mark, which was the second-highest number of single day cases since the pandemic started.

Local health departments will be enforcing the mandate which is set for the next 30 days.

Kentuckians must wear masks when inside public buildings or businesses where they are around people or objects within six feet. Masks also must be worn in restaurants when not eating or drinking.

The mandate does not include children under the age of five or those with health problems that a mask can compromise such as asthma or COPD.

Governor Beshear said this mandate allows the economy to remain open and helps the possibility of events like sports to return sooner.
