BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College men’s basketball team continues to make history as it is now ranked No. 2 in the third edition of the NAIA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced on Tuesday.
The No. 2 ranking is the highest in program history. The only other Union athletic program to be ranked higher was the 2002 women’s soccer team when it was ranked No. 1.
The fourth regular-season poll will be released Tuesday, Jan. 24.
Union collected 291 total voting points, landing 21 points behind No. 1 Cornerstone (Mich.). Saint Francis (Ind.) is third at 285 points with Northwestern (Iowa) checking in at No. 4 with 282 points.
The Bulldogs are 16-3 overall and 9-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) and have won their last 14 in a row.
Union ranks in the top 50 in 22 statistical categories including second in steals per game (10.895), second in total steals (207), third in scoring margin (18.684), fourth in total rebounds (834), fifth in rebounds per game (43.895), sixth in total points (1,696) and eight in total blocks (82).
Individually, Gerrard Newby leads the way as he ranks nationally in 12 categories. He is second in total rebounds (199), third in double-doubles (12), fifth in rebounds per game (10.474), eighth in steals (39), ninth in total points (413) and 12th in 21.737). Tyrone Sherman is third nationally in steals (42) and sixth in total assists (114), and Paul Stone is 22nd in total rebounds (155) and total scoring (346).
