HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - A very active weather period takes over Eastern Kentucky starting today while lasting through Sunday. The first of two systems move through today as showers and thunderstorms will be likely.

Heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and lightning will be the main threats. Some small hail in the stronger storms cannot be ruled out, especially across far southeastern Kentucky. Highs top out in the lower 70’s this afternoon. Tonight, showers remain likely under cloudy skies. Lows will be cooler as temperatures drop into the low 50’s.

System number two develops to our west Saturday before tracking through the Ohio and Tennessee Valley Regions. This will bring rounds of showers and storms to Eastern Kentucky throughout the day Saturday. Heavy rainfall will be the primary threat.

Rain is expected to fall through Saturday night and much of Sunday before wrapping up late Sunday night. Rain totals for much of Eastern Kentucky will range between 1-3”.

After a soggy stretch of weather, mother nature allows conditions to dry out early next week. Sunshine returns to the forecast with temperatures warming back into the mid-upper 70’s for highs.
