LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) - A man was shot by a teenager in London Wednesday afternoon.
Officials say Timothy D. Smith, 38, was outside his home when he was shot once in the leg by a 16-year-old boy. The teenager was armed with a .45 caliber pistol.
The teenager ran away and was caught an hour later. The shooting happened off Slate Lick Road and the teenager was found less than a mile away from Old Richmond Road.
"We saturated the area with our deputies and after less than an hour we located the suspect and we also found the gun. He tried to hide the weapon from us," said Gilbert Acciardo with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.
Police say the teenager went to Smith's home to talk about a stolen weapon and during the conversation, the boy began shooting. He also fired on Smith's mobile home, where several people lived.
The 16-year-old was charged with assault (first-degree), wanton endangerment, tampering with physical evidence and giving false identifying information. He was lodged in Breathitt County Juvenile Detention Facility.
Smith was taken to the UK Medical Center in Lexington for treatment of what police say is a non-life threatening injury.
