(WYMT) - Happy Valentine's Day to everyone across Eastern Kentucky. The weather has turned out to be okay for the holiday that I am sure many of you are celebrating today. We have received a break in the rainfall which has made for a nice part of the day. Unfortunately, models still like the idea of a soggy forecast trend, which the WYMT Weather Team continues to track over the next several days.
Rain chances pick up as we head into the evening hours as the warm front lifts to the north. Cloud cover continues to stick around with plenty of extra moisture through this evening. If you have any plans for the holiday, I would pack an umbrella or rain jacket.
Thursday and Friday
That developing warm front is associated with a low-pressure system which will impact Eastern Kentucky later this week. Southwesterly winds will keep the mountains in the "warm sector" over the next couple of days. Due to that, high temperatures will reach the lower 70s for many locations on Thursday. Scattered rain chances will continue throughout the day before a cold front brings widespread rain chances overnight.
A few rumbles of thunder and some heavy rain will be possible late Thursday and into Friday morning as the cold front brings showers and storms across the mountains. Highs on Friday will occur at midnight at temperatures decrease throughout the day. There is still a decent chance that some snow showers mix into the backside of this system. This is not expected to cause many issues, however, we will continue to keep track of this system.
Mother Nature will not give the mountains a break. I was hopeful of a dry period this weekend. However, after the latest model data, I don't think a dry period is going to happen. Models like the idea of a low-pressure system developing across our region on Saturday, bringing more rain to the mountains. Highs on Saturday will suffer due to the passing cold front on Friday. We will only reach the mid-40s on Saturday.
Sunday looks to be okay for part of the day. A few lingering showers still look possible Sunday morning. I think we do see a time where we are dry throughout the day on Sunday. Unfortunately, I think rain returns late Sunday and into your Monday forecast with highs in the mid 50s by Sunday afternoon.
As always, things can change in a matter of days since we are trying to flip the weather pattern. Stay updated with us for the latest information.
