PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Leaders are working to bring a faster form of internet to Eastern Kentucky.
Broadband is a topic that has been discussed since SOAR started up several years ago.
During a breakout session at the SOAR Summit Friday afternoon, the president of Eastern Telephone and Technology said they are moving onto the second phase of the project.
This project will still take a couple of years to complete, but he believes this is a step in the right direction.
"It'll mean in Eastern Kentucky, replacement jobs for coal and otherwise, cause people will be able to work from home with companies like Amazon, Apple, IBM, and some people do coding from home," said Darrell Maynard, CEO of Eastern Telephone and Technology.
Officials say one of their goals is to make broadband affordable for everyone.
They believe this technology will propel Eastern Kentucky forward.
