Police searching for man they say shot someone in Floyd County

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Kentucky State Police say they are searching for a man after a shooting Saturday morning in Floyd County.

Troopers are looking for Toby Akers, 41. They said the shooting happened at Branhams Creek in the Grethel community.

KSP said Akers got into an argument with the victim and shot them before running from the scene.

Some who live in the area said they believe crime is getting closer to home.

"Well you hear of a lot more shootings in the area and, you know, it's just a lot more going on as far as drugs and violence," said Gary Kidd, who has lived on Branhams Creek Road his whole life.

The victim was taken to Pikeville Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. We do not know the victim’s identity at this time.

Others who live in the area said as long as Akers is one the run they are concerned for their safety.

"You don't know what they get in their mind, they might actually think that they are going to get a long term in prison, they wouldn't care what they do," said one of Kidd's neighbors.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Kentucky State Police Post 9 at (606) 433-7711.
