Police: Drunk driver hits ambulance, kills toddler

WISE COUNTY, Va. (WYMT) - A young boy from Wise County, Virginia inside an ambulance died Monday after a suspected drunk driver hit the ambulance.

From court documents, we learned the driver accused of crashing into the ambulance in North Carolina Sunday was extremely under the influence.

Police charged Jose Romero, 27, with driving while intoxicated, failure to reduce speed and driving without a license.

Around 1 a.m. Sunday police say Romero was driving on US-52 South in Winston Salem when he struck the ambulance. The three-year-old boy was being transported to the hospital with his mother. The ambulance overturned.

The ambulance carrying the child was being operated by Lifecare Ambulance from Wise, Va. Officials there told us they would not comment on the incident.
