Officials suspect arson in Perry County brush fires

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT)- A burn ban is still in effect for our area, however, the ban did not stop multiple fires from breaking out off Highway 15 here in Hazard, putting many businesses and homes in danger.

Officials said they suspect arson.

"It's mainly off Route 15 here,” said Eric Thomas, with the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Officials believe someone started them intentionally on Sunday, putting lives in danger.

"What they may or may not realize is that there are several homes up here on the ridge,” said Thomas. “If this had gotten really out of hand, some people could have been hurt."

Surveillance video from a nearby business shows multiple clouds of smoke rise over the busy highway.

"People coming out of church and having lunch, we feel that someone has seen somebody either walking up this stretch of road, or a vehicle pulled off to the side of the road and stopped," said Thomas.

Officials said a burn ban is in effect until April 15.

If you have any information on the fires you can call Kentucky State Police post in Hazard at (606) 435-6069.
