FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Officials broke ground on a new Air Evac Lifeteam Helipad base in Floyd County Thursday.
The new base is located on top of Sugar Mountain near StoneCrest Golf Course.
The base features a helipad, a fuel farm, hangar and living quarters.
Officials said the base will replace the one located in Martin County.
"This area was chosen strictly because of the elevation," said Bill Baker, Program Director for Air Evac 116. "In the summer we have a problem with fog and this site allows us to have access to more people."
The base will staff pilots 24 hours per day.
Officials say the facility should open in about six months.
