LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - Actor Matthew McConaughey made a surprise appearance in central Kentucky Saturday as part of Wild Turkey Distillery's promotion.
McConaughey was named creative director of the Kentucky bourbon company last summer, and this weekend the Oscar winner spent his birthday passing out turkeys to people in Anderson County.
Dozens of volunteers filled buses Saturday morning and took turns knocking on doors and handing off a big frozen bird.
"I said, ‘go see if that’s Matthew McConaughey.’ It wasn’t, but it was a free turkey," said Daniel Frazier, one of the people who received a free turkey.
In some cases, it was McConaughey at the door! Working with Wild Turkey, the actor helped deliver about a dozen birds himself.
"The girls started screaming, so I look up, and here comes Matthew McConaughey carrying a butterball. I was like, 'oh my gosh.' We all started screaming," said Cathy Sowder who received her turkey from McConaughey.
McConaughey and his team captured the moment on video and posted it to his Facebook page.
"He was like, 'do y’all know what’s happening?' I was like, 'yeah, sexy man carrying a turkey,'" said Brittany Miller about her meeting with McConaughey.
McConaughey and Wild Turkey planned to deliver about 4,500 turkeys Saturday, but it was his presence that might have been most appreciated.
"We look, and it’s Matthew McConaughey, which is amazing, because who doesn’t want Matthew McConaughey to be at your front door," said Miller.
McConaughey said the turkeys were donated by Butterball. Event organizers tell us any leftover turkeys were donated to a local food bank.
