One man in custody after shooting Saturday morning

ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Police responded to a shooting Saturday morning in Estill County.

It happened outside an unmarked mechanic business off Elmer Richardson Road.

Kentucky State Police said Dustin Estes pulled into a parking lot when he was confronted by Steven McDowell. During the confrontation, police said McDowell fired several shots into Estes’ vehicle.

Estes was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Part of Kentucky 52 was shut down about an hour after the shooting as the helicopter flew the victim out.

After searching, KSP and deputies with the Estill County Sheriff’s Department located McDowell and took him into custody for an investigation. He was taken to the Three Forks Regional Jail and charged with assault.

Police are still investigating the incident.
