EKU launches donation fund to save marching band

RICHMOND Ky. (WYMT) - Last week officials with Eastern Kentucky University announced they will take away the marching band due to recent budget cuts. But now some are looking for donations to keep the Colonels going.

"President Benson is doing a lot to help us and I know that it's really hard for the board of regents and the president to cut funding, but I know they had to do it and it's just really hard to see that happening where I go to school,” said Eastern Kentucky University Matthew Baldwin.

Baldwin is one of a few freshman who has been a part of marching band since high school. He said he planned on continuing his career with the Marching Colonels.

"I was upset obviously because I was going to do it next semester,” Baldwin said.

A recent letter on behalf of President Benson states he is trying to keep the band. The letter states if $250,000 is raised in 50 days, every effort will be made to keep them marching on.

EKU has also established a committee which will look to find financial resources to support a marching or pep band.
