FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - City officials in Prestonsburg are moving forward with building a community center.
Prestonsburg Mayor Les Stapleton first announced plans to build a community center in September.
Tuesday morning Stapleton signed the deed to the property and now the project will move into the next steps of being built.
"They can get in there and they can do a lot of stuff it'll be for walking, running, baseball, soccer, volleyball, anything they want to do in there they'll have an opportunity to be able to do it," said Stapleton.
It is an idea Stapleton said he had for years.
"Honestly I drove by that twice a day going back home and it just hit me one day, I wonder what we can do," said Stapleton.
Stapleton plans to renovate a former mechanic shop into a facility with a movie theatre, kids play zone, basketball courts, and party rooms.
"And we're going to be able to bring something into play that will be sort of duel fold we'll have some indoor activities and then we'll have a large field house type area for them participate in," said Stapleton.
He said across the parking lot officials will build a field house with a turf arena and an indoor walking track.
"I mean, of course, I'm super excited growing up here in Eastern Kentucky in Prestonsburg we didn't have anything like this," said City Council Member, Brittainy Branham.
Branham helped with the project and believes this is something that can benefit the entire county.
Along with providing an entertainment and fitness outlet, officials said the community center will bring several jobs to the area.
Stapleton said though the city took out a loan for the center Prestonsburg is financially stable and this is the right time for the project.
