Annual mock disaster training helps prepare nursing students

HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - The nursing program at Southern Kentucky Community and Technical College in Harlan County held their annual mock disaster training Friday.

This year’s disaster was a tornado hitting the Harlan campus, destroying every building in sight. The theme for the mock disaster changes every year and is kept secret from the students.

Nursing Division Chair Kathy Guyn says the world is changing and nurses have to change with it.

If a real disaster happens in this area, we are ready for it because those people will be coming to the hospital and our students are going to be working in those hospitals,” said Guyn.

The first year students served as victims, while the second year students acted as nurses.
